Is God Pleased ? Or No Excuses  I Cor 10:1-13
Pastor Hansen at Bethel June 4, 2006 am
Intro.:
* This is a list of sins that were committed by the Israelites in the wilderness and the penalties for each
* We are reminded that none of them except Joshua and Caleb entered the promised land
* After listing these sins and penalties, Paul tells us in V 13 ® that there is really no excuse for us to commit these same sins today.
* No temptation has come to any of us except that is common to humans.  (such as man can bear).  We do not need to be super human to resist it.
* God is faithful   God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.   1 Corinthians 1:9
* God knows how to deliver the godly our of temptation  The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:   2 Peter 2:9
* God will surely do His part if we do our part.   He will keep us from evil   But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.        2 Thessalonians 3:3
* The way of deliverance will be ready for us at the same time the temptation comes.  The way of escape is different in different temptations but for each temptation God will provide the special means of escaping it.
= NO EXCUSES  ! !

SINS AND PENALTIES:
1. V 1 - 4 Illustrate and type of salvation, baptism etc.
2. V 5    With many of them (lit most of them) God was not well pleased.
  They were overthrown in the wilderness.
But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?  Hebrews 3:17
I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.   Jude 1:5
But among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbered, when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.  For the LORD had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.   Numbers 26:64-65

3. Our examples  -  for this purpose they are here recorded:
 A. Lust
(evil desires - to covet)  after evil things.    V 6
And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? Numbers 11:4
And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.  And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted. {Kibrothhattaavah: that is, The graves of lust}  And the people journeyed from Kibrothhattaavah unto Hazeroth; and abode at Hazeroth. Numbers 11:33-35   IS GOD WELL PLEASED ??

 B. Idol worship (false religion)   Worship of the golden calf    V 7
And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. Exodus 32:6      3,000 died
Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.  Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;  For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth. Deuteronomy 6:13-15

 C. Fornication (any illicit - forbidden - sexual act.  V  8
VIZ:
* Sex before married man and woman
* Sex with anyone not our husband or wife
* Homosexual and lesbian sex acts
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
 {strange: Gr. other} Jude 1:7  To give self over to excessive indulgence

And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.  And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.  And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.  And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.  And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.  And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.  And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;  And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.  And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.   Numbers 25:1-9
Moabites - sexual sins and idol worship together    24,000 died

 D. Tempt the Lord - challenge  God   V  9
Christ was the One who went before Israel and let them.   He also goes before us and leads us today.
 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.   And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.  And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.   Numbers 21:4-6   IS GOD WELL PLEASED ??

 E. Murmur against God and His servants   V  10
             Expressing displeasure or indignant complaining (more privately than publicly)
And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! Numbers 14:2
Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:  Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me, Numbers 14:28-29
And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:  And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.  They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.      Numbers 16:31-33
But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the LORD.   Numbers 16:41
Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, beside them that died about the matter of Korah.          Numbers 16:49

WHAT IS TO BE LEARNED AND DONE:

These things happened and are here recorded for our example.      V   11
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.   Romans 15:4
They were happening to the Corinthians, the church this book was written to:
For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.     1 Corinthians 11:30

These things happened and are here recorded for our example.   Those of us UPON WHOM THE ENDS OF THE WORLD (AGES) IS COME:
 * No secrets
 * All the history of the world stands as our example
 * No excuse !
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.  For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;  Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.   For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:  Romans 1:16-20

The Corinthians were prone (as we are today) to excuse themselves
‘It is a little thing’
‘Doesn’t matter now’
V 13-14  ®   What to do:
1. Confess to God
2. Public contrition (ACKNOWLEDGE SIN AS SIN)
3. Flee from these  (run away from them)
4. Stand fast in God alone V 12
5. Look to God for deliverance from temptation and for forgiveness.

Christian Characteristics     I Cor 16:13-14
Pastor Hansen Bethel June 4, 2006 pm

Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.  Let all your things be done with charity.   1 Corinthians 16:13-14

1. Watchfulness - spiritual alertness
 * against the dangers from without
 * against the dangers from within
 * for opportunities to serve
 * for the coming of Christ
Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
1 Thessalonians 5:6
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:   1 Peter 5:8
Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.    Revelation 3:2
Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.   Revelation 16:15

2. Steadfastness - stand fast in the faith - by adhering to it.
Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;   Philippians 1:27
Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.  Jude 1:3

3. Robustness - Christian manliness - play the man - make a man of ….
   Manliness to:
Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,  I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;   1 Kings 2:1-2
 * Deal with difficulties
 * Bear up under opposition
 * Endure temporary defeat.

4. Strength - Be strong, be strengthened  - work using all the strength we have.
That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;   Ephesians 3:16
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Ephesians 6:10
Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;   Colossians 1:11
Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.          2 Timothy 2:1

4. Love - God’s will to His children concerning our attitude one toward another
Let all your things be done with charity.   1 Corinthians 16:14
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.   John 13:34
And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:                           1 Thessalonians 3:12
And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.        2 Peter 1:7
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.  And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.  And though I bestow all my goods to feed [the poor], and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.   1 Corinthians 13:1-3
 * Love in thought
 * Love in purpose
 * Love in word
 * Love in actions
“Love is like salt; it will preserve from corruption our whole spiritual life”
